Sample records

The following data is only sample data. The names and dates are not actual records.

Please note that the various types of records on the database may not contain information in all of the record fields. The records have been transcribed directly from the original Parish registers and Civil records in Ireland. Unfortunately there were no template information fields when the various clergy were recording information in the parish registers. Some records are very detailed while others contain a minimum amount of information. In some instances the writing in the registers may be illegible or faded, or registers have been damaged. The original data also contains errors and omissions. Some data has information restrictions, as per individual agreements between IFHF Centres and the local clergy, i.e. some comments/remarks recorded within the record are withheld.

There are differences between parish records and civil records:
A church baptismal or marriage record is a record entered by the priest in his parish register.
A civil record is a state record. The civil records usually contain more information than the church records; for instance a civil marriage record will contain the bride and groom's parents' names, addresses and occupations, whereas the church record will only sometimes contain the fathers' names and less often the mothers' of each party. Catholic and Church of Ireland (Anglican) parish records also vary in the information that they contain.

A civil birth record will contain the occupation of the child's father while this is rare in Catholic Church baptismal records but more common in Protestant records.

A civil death record will state the cause of death and the name of the informant of the death whereas a Church of Ireland burial record will usually not have that information. A civil death record does not state the graveyard in which the person is buried.

You can view theses sample records below to see the type of information that may be recorded in each category of record. The following records are sample only. The names and dates are not from actual records.
